PV Chart of the Week: Wafers lag in 2027 US solar supply chain forecast

This week's PV Chart of the Week looks at forecast solar PV supply chain from polysilicon to modules until 2027.

  • Welcome to the PV Chart of the Week produced in partnership with our colleagues at PV Tech Research .
  • This week, we look at the forecast domestic solar PV supply chain in the US until 2027.
  • After exploring the imbalance between solar cells and modules earlier this month, this week’s chart highlights how wafer supply is actually the weakest link in the US.
  • As the chart shows, 2026 and 2027 are both forecast to see an uptick in US cell production, to some extent closing the gap that has opened up between module and cell capacity in the past couple of years.
  • However, the biggest problem is the scarcity of US-made wafers (just over 10GW by 2027) to supply the more than 30GW of solar cells forecast to be in production by 2027.

Part 4: The cell technology race shaping the US PV manufacturing boom

The emerging technology trends shaping solar cell and module manufacturing in the United States.

  • The first three articles in this series treated US manufacturing capacity as a single, undifferentiated pool at each stage of the supply chain.
  • That simplification is useful for mapping overall capacity and identifying structural gaps, such as the wafer shortage in the US supply chain.
  • But it obscures a critical dimension: which cell technologies that capacity is actually built around, and whether the technology mix emerging in the US is the result of a deliberate competitive strategy or a defensive response to trade-enforcement risk.
  • The US is home to what is likely the largest concentration of thin-film solar capacity anywhere in the world, entirely owned by First Solar.
  • PV Tech Research puts thin-film module capacity at 19.5GW against production of 15.4GW, a utilisation rate of roughly 79%, comfortably the healthiest ratio of any technology tracked in this series.
